Birds are singing in the morning, the trees off the Monon are sporting buds, and flowers are beginning to peek through the soil – which can only mean one thing: it’s time for Year 3 of Nice Grants! In case you slept through 2013-14, Nice Grants are our community-focused, creative-project-funding, minimal-strings-attached $1,000 grants that the SmallBox team gives out to Indianapolis-area visionaries who want to make our fair city a better place to live.
What started out as a $5,000 internal incentive for hitting team-wide goals quickly morphed into finding and funding passionate creatives like ourselves who are a few bucks short of realizing an idea they truly believe in. This year, we’ve partnered with DeveloperTown to double the number of Nice Grants. If 5 is nice...then 10 is twice (or thrice!) as nice! We can’t think of a better partner to have along for the ride. They actually co-funded one of the 2014 Nice Grants projects, the train mural by Department of Public Words.
Let’s face it – we love seeing ideas come to fruition and finishing projects – and seeing 10 come to life each year is a whole new level of positive vibes.
If you can’t quite grasp our wide-open version of Naptown Nicing, here are a few stories from past Nicees:
- Reimagined train traffic on the Monon
- Brought a youth biking program up to speed
- Laid the foundation for some fresh beehives
- Helped a music-making-machine hit the right notes
- Let young readers choose their own (reading) adventures
We’re taking applications for your creative project, community initiative, artistic vision, and/or harebrained scheme until April 17. We’ll announce the winners on May 1 – which means there’s no time to waste. Submit your proposal today!
