We built our team and culture over time, fueled by freedom, creativity and a drive to do good in our community. Every ‘Boxer adds their own flair to the living, breathing fuzzy thing that is SmallBox. How we think, how we interact and what each team member brings to the mix all adds up to our culture.
Some of it has been in our DNA from the beginning, thanks to our oldest pet-project, Musical Family Tree. Later we started the 24 Hour Web Project which led to other "cultural instituions." In the end, our collective voices, the causes we champion and the institutions we create all shape who we are.
“We've seen it time and again, when we envision something like Factory Week or Nice Grants, our team will rise to that occasion, make it amazing and then some. Each of our institutions helps shape who we are.”
- Sara McGuyer, Chief Culture Officer
No matter the institution, all of the ideas originated with a SmallBox team member and have become an intricate part of the story of SmallBox. Our CEO Jeb Banner says that the stories of a brand come from compelling ideas – and ideas are compelling because they have a purpose.
Factory Week: Every six months, our team commits to taking an entire week away from the daily routine, get out of our comfort zone, and focus on ourselves... i.e. the ultimate bi-annual creative sabbatical.
24-Hour Web Project: Where we come together around a larger purpose, put our skills into action, and create real and meaningful good in just 24 hours time... after all who needs sleep when there's good to be done?
ThinkKit: Every December we commit to a month of blogging — both to reflect on the year and give ourselves a kick in the blogging-pants.
Nice Grants: No-strings-attached good idea grants for making Indiana great.
Musical Family Tree: One rockin digital archive of original Indiana music.
Our team is full of curious types, thinkers and doers who are driven to blend work and play. We work hard, but have fun too. We have declared freedom for all 'Boxers. That means freedom in scheduling and unlimited vacation too. We believe in celebrating the goodness of the week, usually on Friday afternoons in Beer Friday form.
How do we know who fits well with our culture? It’s an energy thing. Are you passionate about life? Do you challenge yourself? Résumés are important, but we want to know what people have learned from life.
