SMO (Social Media Optimization) is the latest acroynm in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) family. So what does it mean? First let's review what Social Media is. The most well known examples are MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Delicious and StumbleUpon. These sites are driven by content added by users. This is the modern equivalent of a town gossip, one user whispers in another's ear and suddenly everyone is talking about Jib Jab or another cool, viral Web phenomenon.
We add Social Media bookmarks to many of the Web sites we build since it allows Social Media users an easy way to create a link from their profile to the web page. This does two things, creates traffic and external links. Both of which help your Web site getting better search engine results.
